Genus Apogon

Apogon Lacepede, 1801

Posterior edge of preopercle serrated. No canine teeth. First dorsal fin with 6-7 visible spines; second dorsal fin with 1 spine and 9 rays; anal fin with 2 spines and 8-10 (usually 8) rays. Scales usually ctenoid. Lateral line complete, not extending far onto caudal fin.
Littoral or sublittoral in relatively shallow waters of all subtemperate to tropical seas, chiefly on coral reefs. Oral incubation of eggs widespread, chiefly by males.

Species at least 250; in Clofnam area 2.

Recent revision: Fraser (1972—recognizes 10 subgenera).
