Genus Gymnammodytes

Gymnammodytes Duncker and Mohr, 1939

Oblique lateral skin-folds absent, and myotomes clearly visible through body wall. No vomerine teeth. Margins of dorsal and anal fins undulated. Body naked except posterior third where some scales are found loosely arranged alongside and posterior to the lateral line canals, and ventrolaterally. Lateral line canal branches with pores at ends of branches of which there are twice as many below as above the line. Length up to 28 cm.
At least in the eastern North Atlantic, rarely found inshore and usually associated with shell-gravel substrates. Plankton feeding.
