Trachipterus Goüan, 1770
Long, slender, compressed and scaleless body, up to 2.5 m in length; recurved pointed teeth in both jaws and on vomer; palatine teeth feeble, if present. Dorsal fin long, with 145-190 finrays, the first few rays elongate (at least in the young); no anal fin; pectoral fins small, horizontally inserted; pelvic fin minute or absent in adults; caudal fin fanlike, upper lobe often perpendicularly upturned. Scales absent; lateral line straight on tail, armed with small forwardly directed spines; sharptipped tubercules along midventral profile.
Species about 5; in Clofnam area 2.
