Genus Opeatogenys

Opeatogenys Briggs, 1955

Body subcylindrical anteriorly; head more or less triangular in dorsal outline, snout slightly produced. Head highly depressed, length 2.7-2.9 and width 3.8-4.4 times in SL. Teeth small, conical, recurved, in deep patches towards front of each jaw, narrowing to single row along sides of jaws, larger than those found in front. On third gill arch 5-7 short, blunt rakers. Median fins short. Dorsal finrays 3-5; anal finrays 3-5; caudal finrays 8-10; pectoral finrays 16-22. Disc length 3.8-4.7 times in SL. Shape of subopercular element distinctive, being developed into a strong, pungent spine. Vertebrae 29-30. Males with rather large and elongate urogenital papilla.
