Genus Phycis

Phycis Artedi, 1792

Moderately elongate gadoid fishes with 2 dorsal fins and 1 anal fin, first dorsal fin with more than 8 rays. Pelvic fins reduced to 3 rays, with a bifid filamentous ray reaching at least to vent. Frontals united. Opisthotic posteriorly with process (see Fig. 3 in key to genera), posttemporal large, one of its prongs articulated with opisthotic process, another with epiotic.
Biology unknown. Often living in small groups from littoral (rarely) to 800 m.
