Genus Onogadus

Onogadus De Buen, 1930

Elongate gadoid fishes with 2 dorsal fins the first with an elongate first finray (greater than orbit diameter) followed by fine short finrays; a single anal fin; second dorsal and anal fins long and of even height. 3 barbels, 1 on chin and 1 on each anterior nostril. Mouth moderately large, the gape not extending beyond the orbit, less than half head length; upper jaw teeth of uniform size, except outer row twice as big in small specimens. Vertebrae: 50-52; abdominal 17-18.
Found offshore in deep water, at depths of 150-1,600 m.
