Genus Brosme

Brosme (Cuvier) Oken, 1817

A barbel on chin equal to eye diameter. A single dorsal fin and a single anal fin, both narrowly joined. to caudal fin. Pelvic fins not reduced and not elongate. Scales minute, deeply embedded.

Habitat: offshore, benthic, at 100-1,000 m, usually 100-400 m, on hard, rocky ground. Behaviour: sluggish, solitary or in small shoals. Food: molluscs, crustaceans. Reproduction: from May to July, in shallower waters, between 40-400 m, usually from 100 to 200 m.

Distribution: eastern North Atlantic from British Isles to western Barents Sea, Iceland, Skagerrak, Kattegat, also western North Atlantic.
