First section of dorsal fin a single elongate ray inserted on top of head. Middle rays of second dorsal and anal fins notably shorter than those preceding and following them. Pelvic fins long, with several strong rays. Lateral line canals on dorsal surface of body paralleling the middorsal line.
Neritic and oceanic pelagic. Some species taken in considerable numbers, especially the early stages; other species apparently rare. Feeding on phyto- and zooplankton, especially crustaceans. Eggs and larvae pelagic. At least some species apparently carry out diurnal vertical migrations. Eaten in India and South-east Asia. Locally important as forage.
