Body naked, very elongate, more or less compressed and tapering to a point; anus before midpoint. Head long, with sharp beak-like snout. On both jaws teeth small, acute, multiserial; vomerine teeth larger, close set, compressed or conical. Gill openings broad and confluent ventrally on throat. Dorsal and anal fins long, confluent with caudal fin; pectoral fins rudimentary or absent; pelvic fins absent. Vertebrae 140-170.
Adults epi- to abyssopelagic. Hatching area in Sargasso Sea; characteristic compressed transparent larval stage (leptocephali) with metamorphosis.
