Genus Ophichthus

Ophichthus Ahl, 1789

Body very elongate; anus in anterior half. Snout subconical, lower jaw included; anterior nostril tubular, posterior along lower edge of lip or opening into mouth. Dentition variable, from numerous, small and multiserial to few, large and uni- or biserial; teeth largest on premaxillae and vomer. Dorsal, anal and pectoral fins well developed; dorsal fin origin above pectoral fins; caudal fin absent, caudal extremity hardened.
