Genus Gymnothorax

Gymnothorax Bloch, 1795

Body elongate. Only anterior nostril tubular (at front of snout), posterior nostril a single pore, near upper anterior eye margin. Teeth triangular, somewhat elongate, edges serrated in some species. Gill openings restricted to a small roundish lateral pore. Dorsal fin origin well berore gill opening; dorsal and anal fins confluent with caudal fin; pectoral and pelvic fins absent.
