Genus Scymnodon

Scymnodon Bocage and Capello, 1864

Snout in front of mouth no longer than distance from mouth to origin of pectoral fins. Pre-oral clefts expanded inwardly. Teeth in both jaws with a single cusp, those of lower jaw wider than those of upper jaw; length of upper jaw teeth midway along jaw much longer than those near symphysis and those near corner of jaw; lower teeth triangular and symmetrical near symphysis, only weakly oblique towards corners of mouth and not forming a continuous cutting edge. Pectoral fins with broadly rounded inner corner; dorsal fin spines scarcely projecting beyond skin, with lateral grooves; caudal peduncle without pre-caudal pits or lateral grooves; caudal fin with sub-terminal notch. Dermal denticles on sides of trunk sub-ovoid in outline, with a medial ridge which generally extends full length of outer surface; median concavity either lacking or not consplcuous.
