Dalatias Rafinesque, 1810
Snout in front of mouth considerably shorter than distance from mouth to level of origin of pectoral fins; pre-oral clefts absent. Upper teeth narrow and awl-shaped; lower teeth symmetrical, with triangular serrated cusps, bases notched along outer edge at base of cusp. Lips with complex series of cross-folds and finely fringed edges. Pectoral fins with inner corners broadly rounded; dorsal fins without spines, origin of first dorsal fin nearer to posterior edge of pectoral fins than to origin of pelvic fins; first dorsal fin larger than second, base of first 1.3 times that of second; caudal peduncle with pre-caudal pits or lateral ridges; caudal fin with a sub-terminal notch. Dermal denticles on sides of body thick, quadrateshaped, with ridges which converge posteriorly.
