Snout in front of mouth about equal to distance from mouth to level of origin of pectoral fins. Without nasal barbels. Pre-oral clefts more or less expanded inwardly. Teeth in both jaws with a single cusp, uppers closeset with some overlapping and forming interlocking band, lowers wider than uppers and strongly directed outward along each side of jaw. Inner corner of pectoral fins quadrate or angular and usually extended; dorsal fin spines with lateral grooves; caudal peduncle without pre-caudal pits or lateral ridges; caudal fin with sub-terminal notch and moderately to strongly developed anterior ventral lobe. Dermal denticles along sides of body low, block-like, scale-like, leaf-like or conical.
Species about 8-11; in Clofnam area 5 (perhaps fewer, but a revision of this genus is needed).
