Genus Pristis

Pristis Linck, 1790

See family for general features, biology, etc....

Species about 9; in Clofnam area 2.

Recent revisions: Bigelow and Schroeder (1953).

Note: records given in Clofnam (No. 18.1.2) of Pristis microdon from the Mediterranean (only) are probably incorrect. The description by Tortonese (1956: 206) was based on a juvenile male in the Turin Museum and also a saw, neither with locality data and the juvenile certainly not from the Clofnam area (Magenta expedition collection, No. 2694). Records for the Mediterranean are otherwise based solely on Costa (1837), whose specimen probably did not come from the Mediterranean (Naples). Thus P. microdon (and P. perotteti if distinct) almost certainly does not penetrate north of Senegal; it would be recognized by its distinct lower caudal lobe.
