Diagnosis: rings 17-19 + 47-50, D 38-49, P 14-16, total subdorsal rings 12-14. Snout long and slender, its length more than half of HL; body rings prominent, distal margins typically with somewhat elevated spinelike points in sub-adults and adults. Colour: dorsum and upper part of side blue, shading to silver ventrally; often with a blue-black blotch on dorsum of each ring. Size: to 20 cm TL.
Habitat: pelagic, typically offshore. Food: no data. Reproduction: brooding throughout year, mostly April-October. Males with 300-400 pouch-eggs (1.3-1.4 mm diameter); early free-living young about 18 mm TL.
Distribution: Mediterranean Sea and adjacent Atlantic coasts, mostly in western Mediterranean.
