Diagnosis: head large; snout a little shorter than orbit diameter (10% of SL against 11% for the orbit); preorbital bone with 4 spines over maxilla; sub-orbital ridge with 3 spines, upper post-temporal spine present; other spines as for the genus. Occipital pit well developed. A single large pore at the symphysls of the lower jaw. Supra-ocular tentacle short, less than half the orbit diameter; no skin flaps on lower jaw; body skin appendages poorly developed. Dorsal fin with 12 spines and 9 rays; pectoral fin with 18 rays, rays 2-7 branched, and reaching to about over the first anal spine. Lateral line with 24 tubular scales; scales on sides ctenoid; 44 vertical rows of scales; chest, pectoral fin base and head naked. Vertebrae 24. Gillrakers including rudiments 15-16, all fairly short (5 on upper arch, 8 on ceratobranchial and 2-3 on hypobranchial). Colour: all fins spotted with brown; some brown spots on head on lighter brown background; pale brown spots on sides and in pectoral axil; dark pigmentation between soft dorsal fin and anal fin; no black spot on the spinous dorsal. Size: 9.8 cm.
Habitat: benthic on hard bottoms. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: known only from the holotype collected in the Azores (Terceira) .
