Diagnosis: body fusiform, compressed; dorsal profile of head straighl eye large; mouth large, terminal; teeth small; gillrakers 3 (4) + 1+ l0 (11), total 14 (15-16). Dorsal finrays (12)13; pectoral finrays 16-17; ana finrays 11 (10-12); an adipose dorsal fin present. Scales deciduous. Mid ventral and bilateral rows of photophores on body, LO series 20-22 reaching to about end of base of anal fin. Colour: (according to Matsubara, 1943) in life, red or blood-red on sides of head and body, paler below; belly silvery white with bluish reflections. Size: to 305 mm.
Habitat: benthopelagic over continental and island slopes at 250- 700 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 120 mm.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic between 23° and 35° N and off Madeira. Elsewhere, western Atlantic from off Virgin Islands to Straits of Florida; one record from Indian Ocean (27° 45' S, 32° 44' E); western Pacific from off southern Japan to north-eastern New Zealand.
