Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 14 (15); anal finrays 15; pectoral finrays 11 (12). Gillrakers 8 (9) + 1 + 15 (16), total 24 (25-26). AO 6 (5) + 5 (4, rarely 6), total 11(10, rarely 12). Vn larger in adult males than in adult females. Size: 80 mm (max.).

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 325-850 m (maximum abundance at 400-500 m); night at 40-225 m (maximum abundance at 100 m). Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 63 mm. Gravid females have been taken above 200 m.

Distribution: Atlantic: (?) subtropical pattern (north-subtropical subpattern), between about 37° and 20° N (eastern sector) and from 10° to 35° N (western sector), but most abundant in the Caribbean. Lesser Antillean and Straits of Florida provinces. Elsewhere: Pacific Ocean (South-East Asian Seas between 8° N and 7° S and between New Caledonia and New Zealand).
