Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 13 (12, rarely 14); anal finrays 14 (13-15); pectoral finrays 13 (12-14). Gillrakers 6 (7, rarely 5) + 1 + 13 (12-14, rarely 15), total 20 (19-21, rarely 18 or 22). AO 6 (5-7) + 4 (3), total 10 (9-11). Size: to 117 mm.
Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 375-750 m (maximum abundance at 450-500 m); night at 40-650 m (maximum abundance at 100 m). Large specimens non-migratory. Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 90 mm. Spawning peak in late winter-spring (Bermuda) and late summer-autumn (Hawaii).
Distribution: Atlantic: tropical pattern (holotropical subpattern), generally in western sector north to about 40° N but in eastern sector between 14° N and 2° S; also between 34° and 40° S (western sector) and 32° and 38° S (eastern sector). A single specimen has now been taken inside the Clofnam area at Walther Herwig St. 389/79 (45° 41' N, 13° 42' W: c. 2000-0 m) and represents a new record for the area. Elsewhere: western Indian Ocean between 21° and 30° S and Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, east coast of Australia, near 36° S, 125° W.
