Diagnosis: body slender, its depth up to about 16 times in SL. Head about 5-6 times in SL; snout pointed, about half head length; gillrakers moderately developed, but absent in adults. Dorsal fin short, set well back on body, with 11-12 (13) finrays; pectoral finrays 10-12; pelvic fins well before dorsal fin origin, with 9 finrays; anal fin far back on body, with (21) 22-24 finrays. Anus behind pelvic fin tips. Body naked except for lateral line scales (66-70). Vertebrae 80-85. Colour: Iight with dark dorsal band; no change to black in adults. Size: known to 13.5 cm.

Habitat: mesopelagic, from near surface to about 650 m. Food: mainly planktonic organisms, rarely small fishes. Reproduction: throughout year in subtropical and tropical waters.

Distribution: antitropical pattern, from 35° to 15° N. Elsewhere, southward from 35° to 10° S, and similar pattern in western Atlantic.
