Dorsal fin short, a little behind midpoint of body, with 9-10 finrays; a short adipose dorsal fin near tail; pectoral finrays 11-12; pelvic fins distinctly before dorsal fin origin, with 9 finrays; anal fin far back, with 28-33 finrays and an adipose fin in front as far as anus, which is below or behind dorsal fin origin. Distribution: tropical and temperate waters. Elsewhere, worldwide in tropical and temperate waters, but not recorded in south-eastern Pacific.
Note: two species and two subspecies, as presently recognized, seem to be part of the jayakari-complex, but revisionary work is badly needed.
