Diagnosis: snout to origin of dorsal fin 20.0-30.5% TL, of anal fin 24.0% TL, and of dorsolateral white lines 7.9% TL. Pectoral finrays 47-48. No dorsolateral filaments on trunk, 12-26 on tail, several of these branched; the longest about 85% TL behind snout. Caudal organ short, fusiform with several slender filaments and without anterior isolated spots of photogenic tissue. Colour: black. Size: to at least 62 cm TL.
Habitat, Food and Reproduction: probably as in S. ampullaceus.
Distribution: two records west of Madeira. Elsewhere, one record north of the Cape Verde Is., one off Cape Town and one in western Indian Ocean.
