Diagnosis: vomerine teeth in an anchor-shaped patch, with teeth extending backward on midline of roof of mouth. Dl VIII-IX; D2
I + 11-14, A III + 10-12. Scales in lateral line 57-65 (mode 60). Colour: silvery, bluish or greenish on back; adults with small black spots scattered on back and sides. A conspicuous black spot on opercle. Size: to about 70 cm SL.
Habitat: on various kinds of bottoms, also in brackish waters and occasionally in rivers. Food: chiefly shrimps and molluscs, also fishes. Reproduction: January-March in Mediterranean, March-June in British Isles.
Distribution: eastern North Atlantic from the English Channel (occasional) southward along coasts of Europe and Morocco, also southern Mediterranean. Elsewhere, recorded from the Gulf of Suez and in the Atlantic southward to Senegal and the Canaries.
