Diagnosis: body rather heavy, oval, laterally compressed. Snout pointed. Head length equal to body depth. A few cephalic pores. Preoperculum smooth. Mouth cleft extends backwards to eye. A single row of strong, protruding canine-like teeth with coalesced bases. Hind canine present. Dorsal finrays XII + 11; anal finrays III + 13. Scales large. Head and base of dorsal and anal fins scaly, except inter-orbital surface and snout. Numerous rows of scales behind eye and on inter-operculum. Scales along lateral line 45; rows of scales above lateral line 7.5, on cheek 8-9, behind cye 7. Colour: body pink, purple. A large dark spot from first to fourth rays of dorsal fin. A darkish vertical band on middle of body at level of black anus. Size: to 65 cm SL.

Distribution: Madeira. Elsewhere, in subtropical and tropical eastern Atlantic, including the Canaries and the Cape Verde Is.
