Accepted name: Carapus acus (BrĂ¼nnich, 1768) (updated 2009-06-25)
Diagnosis: (known only from three specimens). Head greater than 1/8 TL; pectoral fin three-fifths head length, abdomen thicker than that of other carapids, and significantly deeper than length of head. Mouth oblique; teeth similar to C. acus, but medial vomerine row somewhat enlarged. Meristic values similar to C. acus. Colour: no data. Size: holotype 216 mm, paratypes 221 and 230 mm TL.
Habitat: unknown, but adult assumed to be commensal in holothurians, although the three specimens known were taken at 50 fathoms and apparently were free living. Remainder of biology assumed to be similar to C. acus.
Distribution: reported only from Madeira.
Note. Doubtfully distinct from C. acus.
