Accepted name: Carapus acus (Brünnich, 1768) (updated 2009-06-25)
Diagnosis: (known only from holotype): mouth very oblique, maxilla extends behind orbit; single pair of enlarged teeth at symphysis of upper jaw; remainder of jaw teeth uniform conical; 5 posterior vomerine teeth greatly enlarged. Pectoral fin two-fifths head length. Meristic values similar to C. acus. Colour: in life probably similar to C. acus. Size: holotype 209 mm TL.
Habitat: unknown, but adult assumed to be commensal in holothurians. Remainder of biology assumed to be similar to C. acus.
Distribution: type in Museu Municipal, Funchal, Madeira, but collection locality unknown; presumed caught around Madeira.
Note. Doubtfully distinct from C. acus.
