Diagnosis: body fairly elongate, its depth 9-11% TL at anal origin, covered with scales, including belly to pelvic fins, also bases of unpaired fins. Crests on chin rectangular or slightly projecting. Pectoral fin with 17-20 finrays; pelvic fins 2.6-3.0% TL, shorter than in L. sagittarius; preanal distance 38-41% TL. Lateral line double, with ventral and midlateral branches. Vertebrae 97-104. Colour: body and fins uniformly dark, greyish-brown, without any light markings; peritoneum dark brown to black. Size: to 30 cm.
Habitat: benthic on muddy bottoms at 700-1,751 m, with bottom temperatures below O °C (-0.6 to -1.1 °C). Food: no data. Reproduction: eggs demersal, few (about 60), 3.5 mm diameter (in June).
Distribution. Norwegian Sea to north of the Faroe-Shetland slope. Elsewhere, Beaufort Sea at 357 m (McAllister, 1975), also Davis Strait (66° 32' N, 59° 04' W at 700 m, 2 specimens in Zoological Institute, Leningrad).
