Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XIII + 19-20; anal finrays II + 21; pectoral finrays 14; pelvic finrays I + 3. No canines in upper jaw. Colour: basic coloration brownish; 7-8 dark vertical bars on body most distinct dorsally; a black spot between anterior 2 dorsal finrays. Spawning males with bulb glands on spiny anal finrays. Size: to 9 cm.
Habitat: on rocky shores from 2 to 20 m, preferably at 5 m. Behaviour: single or in groups of 5-15 specimens. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: the Azores and Madeira.
