Diagnosis: females with illicial length 25-35% SL, esca with a small anterior and slightly larger distal papilla on midline of bulb; a crescent-shaped posterior appendage with swollen base, pigmented in large specimens; 4-10 vomerine teeth; other characters in genus and key.

Distribution: all oceans; in Clofnam area two specimens from north-east of the Azores not previously recorded (FFS Anton Dohrn, May1979, St. 380/79 and 389/79).

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.

Note. The single specimen previously recorded from the Clofnam area(DANA St. 1370 (erroneously 1142 in Clofnam) 36°36' N, 26°14' W, now BMNH 1925.8.11.13), was described by Regan and Trewavas (1932) as a syntype of D. jubatus n.sp. This species was synonymized with D. longicornis by Bertelsen (1951) but resurrected by Pietsch (1972).
