Diagnosis: females with slender, not globular body, a large oval pit antenor to eye in specimens larger than about 40 mm; a short hyoid barbel present in specimens less than about 50 mm, reduced to a small protuberance or lost in larger specimens; esca with an anterior compressed, fan-shaped appendage and a short, digitiform, slightly compressed posterior appendage. Males (in late metamorphosis stage) with 3 upper and 4 lower denticular teeth, fused at base. D 6-7; A 5-6. Other characters in genus.

Distribution: about 25 records from all oceans. A single not previously published record from Clofnam area (230 mm, 30°45' N, 14°30' W, Thalassa X.076, 10 February 1971).
