Diagnosis: bait a dense cluster of elongate, slender filaments. Second dorsal spine attached to head by membrane. Dorsal finrays III + 13, 7-13 posteriormost soft finrays bifurcate; anal finrays 8 (rarely 7), all bifurcate; pectoral finrays 13 (rarely 12), all bifurcate. Colour: a large darkly pigmented, basidorsal ocellus. Size: to 285 mm SL.

Habitat: benthic at 45-115 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: west coast of Africa from Morocco to Cape Morro, Angola.
