Diagnosis: body depressed, depth 5.7-6.8 (m = 6.3) times in SL. Flattened papillae in 4-6 rows across width of disc region A; 5-6 rows across disc region B. Dorsal finrays 17-21 (m = 19); anal finrays 10-12; pectoral finrays 20-23 (m= 21); caudal finrays 11-14 (m= 12). Colour: much red in various patterns; often a pair of blue ocelli on head behind eyes. Size: to 75 mm SL.

Habitat, Food, Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Mediterranean west of Cape Roux, Tunisia, and off Atlantic coast from Dakar and the Canaries to Shetland Is.; possibly in Black Sea.
