Accepted name: Trachyrincus scabrus (Rafinesque, 1810) (updated 2009-06-25)

Diagnosis: head length about 25-32% of body length; snout long and pointed, 38 45% head length, with a ridge on side extending back to operculum; mouth inferior; eye large, 24-29% head length. Pyloric caeca 26-48, very branched. First dorsal fin with 11-12 finrays, second beginning just behind, somewhat longer than anal fin; pectoral fin with 20-22 finrays; pelvic fin with 7 finrays (rarely 6). Scales spinous, enlarged along dorsal and ventral profiles, 23-42 such scales dorsally behind vertical from anus, but none ventrally before anus. Colour: greybrown. Size: to over 50 cm TL.

Habitat: benthopelagic at 400-1,500 m. Food: fishes, shrimps, mysids, copepods. Reproduction: in February-March in Mediterranean.

Distribution: Atlantic northwards to Irish continental shelf and in Mediterranean. Elsewhere, southward to the Cape Verde Is.
