Diagnosis: head length about 17-20% of body length, upper head profile not rising steeply. Snout fairly blunt, sub-orbital ridge with scute-like scales extending back under eye; mouth subterminal, small, upper jaw about one-third head length; moderate chin barbel, about half eye diameter; gillrakers 9-10. First dorsal fin with 11-12 finrays; second dorsal fin beginning behind anal fin origin, the finrays very short; pectoral fin with 21-24 finrays; pelvic fin with 13 finrays, outer finray prolonged. Scales with mainly conical to lanceolate spinules, the middle row of spinules the most prominent and forming a sharp ridge on head and nape scales. Pyloric caeca (no data). Colour: medium brown, with blue tinge on sides of abdomen, blackish on belly; lips, branchiostegal membrane and fins blackish. Size: to at least 40.5 cm TL.
Habitat: benthopelagic at 1,710 m (Madeira) or 1,440 m (Gulf of Mexico). Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Madeira (single specimen). Elsewhere, Gulf of Mexico (single specimen).
