Diagnosis: head large, about 15-20% SL, snout blunt, mouth terminal, jaws equal; eye moderate, 17.3-21.2% head length, chin barbel absent. Pyloric caeca about 21. No elongate finrays; first dorsal with 9-11 finrays, second dorsal fin beginning just behind it; pectoral fin with 15-17 finrays, inserted under or slightly behind first dorsal fin origin; pelvic finrays 9 (rarely 10), none elongate, inserted under or slightly behind pectoral fin base. Scales without spinules. No light organ. Colour: body grey-brown, head darker; mouth, gill chamber and body cavity black. Size: to at least 50 cm TL.

Habitat: benthopelagic at 770-2,745 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Atlantic off Morocco and Madeira. Elsewhere, southward to Gulf of Guinea, also western North Atlantic.
