Diagnosis: coronal fossa on frontals closed in front of commissure between supra-orbital canals. Pelvic finrays extending beyond anal fin origin. Third ray of first dorsal fin elongate. First dorsal finrays 8-12, second dorsal finrays 56-64; anal finrays 50-56. About 100 scales in Iateral line and 5-6 scales between first dorsal fin base and lateral line. Colour: brownish or grey; dorsal, anal and caudal fins with black edge. Size: to 75 cm SL, usually 15-30 cm.
Habitat: offshore, over sandy or muddy bottoms, at 150-300 m, sometimes at 10 m. Food: chiefly crustaceans, sometimes fish. Reproduction: spring and early summer, in Mediterranean from January to May.
Distribution: north-eastern Atlantic from Iceland, Norway, Skagerrak, Kattegat to Morocco, also Mediterranean, Adriatic.
