Diagnosis: pectoral fins and chin barbel present. Serial photophores conspicuous, mostly in widely spaced groups, those of ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 17-19 in 5 or 6 (usually 6) groups; in lateral row to before pelvic fin insertion 18-20 in 5 or 6 (usually 6) groups. Colour: head and body black; pale luminous spots on head forming broken lines from nostrils to post-orbital organ and from above postorbital organ to rear of head. Size: to about 21.5 cm.

Distribution: only from the Azores. Elsewhere, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, North Atlantic between 30° and 35° N, one record from 51° N, 45° W, another north-west of the Azores; one record from south-western Pacific off Chile.
