Diagnosis: body fairly slender, somewhat compressed. Eye far forward, snout short; gill cover enlarged diagonally downward; upper jaw reaching well beyond eye and more than half length of head; gillrakers 3-4 + 1 + 7-8 = 11-15. Dorsal fin origin relatively far forward, well before anal fin origin; pectoral fin small, set low on body. Vertebrae 25-32 + 14-20 = 42-49. Colour: blackish. Size: to at least 34 cm.
Habitat: meso- to bathypelagic at 450-4,376 m, usually at 1,750-2,200 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: ovarian eggs large (to 2.7 mm diameter) and few (to 1,000 in a clutch).
Distribution: scattered records in southern part of Clofnam area, from south-west of Ireland to the Azores. Elsewhere. to 21° 35' S and circumglobal.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. Nielsen and Larsen, 1968: 228-229, 231, fig. 7 (Macromastax gymnos is probably a juvenile form).
