Diagnosis: body moderately elongate and compressed; head very large, almost half body length, the gill cover reaching back to cover base of pectoral fin; snout with sharp ridge down midline; eye large, its hind margin before midpoint of head; interorbital width 4.6-6.4% SL; tip of upper jaw not reaching beyond eye; gillrakers 45 + 1 + 9-12 = 15-18. Pyloric caeca 3-4. Dorsal finrays 16-17, pectoral fin fan-like, with 13-15 finrays, pelvic fin near to anal fin, with 5 finrays, anal finrays 16-17, its origin opposite dorsal fin. Lateral line indistinct; body scales barely im: bricate, pre-dorsal midline naked above pectoral fins. Colour: brownish. Size: to 17 cm.
Habitat: bathypelagic at about 1,300-3,660 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: off Gibraltar (single specimen, the type). Elsewhere, eastern South Atlantic, eastern and western central Pacific and Indian Ocean, possibly circumglobal.
