Pungitius Coste, 1848
With (6) 7-12 spines, bent alternately to the left and to the right, before the dorsal fin. Snout moderately elongate, not tubular. Pelvic fins not far behind the pectoral fins, with 1 + 0-1 (2) rays. Skin naked or covered with thin bony plates. Caudal peduncle with or without a keel. Branchiostegal membranes joined to each other, forming a free fold across the isthmus.
Species belonging to this genus build nests. The eggs are guarded by the male.
