Third and fourth sub-orbital bones absent; second sub-orbital bone uniformly broad or gradually becoming wider posteriorly, without spines in adults. Occipital pit absent. Dorsal fin with 12 spines and 9 or 10 rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 5 rays (2 spines in juveniles); pectoral fin with 20-25 rays. The lateral line forms a broad groove without tubular scales but covered by thin membranous scales; scales on body small and cycloid. Absence of fleshy appendages on head or body. Vertebrae 24.
Tropical and warm waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
