Medium-sized bathypelagic fishes (to about 50 cm); body elongate and slender, compressed anteriorly; head long; mouth large, lower jaw prolonged as a cartilaginous process teeth present on jaws and palatines, absent on vomer and tongue; gillrakers absent. All fins with soft rays; dorsal fin absent, adipose fin present. Scales absent on body except on lateral line. Swimbladder absent.
Antitropical fishes from temperate waters, reaching to Poles in Al tic and Pacific.
