Genus Pachycara

Body moderately elongate, robust, covered with scales; tail short. Mouth terminal or subterminal, lips fleshy but not thickened; upper lip free across snout, lower lip adnate at dentary symphysis; mental crests absent. Cephalic lateral pores small, rounded, relatively few; lateral line double, mediolateral and ventral. Pelvic fins absent (P. bulbiceps), present (10 species), or variably present and absent (2 species).Vertebrae symmetrical, 21-32 precaudal. Vomerine and palatine teeth, pseudobranch and pyloric caeca present. Parasphenoid wing not extending above midheight of trigeminofacialis foramen; palatopterygoid (palatal) arch well developed, with ectopterygoid and mesopterygoid broadly articulating with quadrate (Anderson, 1989).
