Genus Tripterygion

Tripterygion Risso, 1826

Head and breast not scaly; lateral line interrupted, anteriorly with tubules and posteriorly with notched scales.
Shallow littoral, primary and secondary hard bottoms, avoiding dense algal cover. Often dense populations. Spawning males territorial, showing characteristic nuptial coloration: black head mask and bright red or yellow body.
