Body oblong, more or less deep, compressed; upper profile of head convex with a very slight gibbosity in front of eyes which are small moderate; scales on cheek and opercle; lips rather thick; in front jaws, 46 canine-like teeth; behind them more obtuse and shorter tee becoming more or less gradually molariform in 2-3 rows.
Littoral or inshore waters, on various bottoms; generally carnivorous; where known, hermaphroditic (few data about reproduction and behaviour); marketed fresh, frozen and as fish-meal; flesh of good quality.
