Genus Callanthias

Callanthias Lowe, 1839

Rather small-sized fishes. Body slender. Eye large. Opercle with 2 spines; preopercular edge smooth. Small canine teeth at front of jaws and a distinctive pair of canines on sides of lower jaw. Caudal fin lunate. Scales ctenoid. Lateral line close to base of dorsal fin, incomplete, ending about under the end of dorsal fin.
Bottom-living species, sublittoral. Carnivorous. Protogyny probable, at least in some species.

Species 4 or 5; in Clofnam area 1.

Note. Systematic position uncertain, included also in Grammistidae.
