Body elongate, strongly compressed, covered in mucus. Head small, snout blunt, naked (except P. nebulosus); jaw teeth conical and blunt. Dorsal and anal fins long; pelvic fins rudimentary (1 spine and 1 soft ray in Pholis). Scales small, lateral line canals on head, but not on body. Littoral fishes, often found under rocks or in tide-pools at low tide.
