Lappanella Jordan, 1891
Diagnosis: body slender. Snout pointed. Mouth rather large. Head longer than body depth. Preopercular edge serrated. 2 rows of caninelike teeth, front one of first row longer and protruding; hind canine present: first row of teeth (18-26/20-28). Snout with 2-6 pores. Upper lip with 5 8 rolds. Dorsal finrays XVI XVII + 9-12; anal finrays III + 8-11. Scales rather large. Head scaly except for snout (some scales between eyes), 1 or 2 rows of scales on base of dorsal and anal fins. Scales along lateral line 35-38; rows of scales above lateral line 2.5-3.5, on cheek 3-5, behind eye 3-4, on inter-operculum 3 (15-25 scales). Gillrakers 14-16. Vertebrae 35. Colour: no sexual dimorphism, reddish, pink or orange. A dark blotch on dorsal fin, on end of spiny and beginning of soft part. Another one on upper part of caudal peduncle. A small dark spot on middle part of caudal fin. Size: to 14 cm SL.
Habitat: deep rocky areas (100-200 m). Food: crabs, gastropods and polychaetes. Reproduction: north-eastern Mediterranean in April-May.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic Ocean (Madeira), western Mediterranean and Adriatic.
