Genus Mesogobius

Mesogobius Bleeker, 1874

Sub-orbital papillae with 8-10 transverse rows; 4 or 5 before, and 3 lower parts below, longitudinal row b. No row a. Anterior and posterior oculoscapular, and preopercular head canals present. Predorsal area and at least rear nape scaled; cheek naked. Anterior nostril a short tube, without process from rim. Pectoral fin uppermost rays within membrane. Pelvic disc complete, rounded, without conspicuous lateral lobes. First dorsal finrays VI. Scales ctenoid, 72-85 in lateral series. Vertebral mode 35 (34-36). Ponto-Caspian species, the largest European gobiid, epibenthic and predatory. Used in local fisheries.
